Google services based on the Android operating system are to be available in Volvo Cars' new models within the next two years.

The new services, based on the integration of Android as the operating system, will soon be available in all new Volvo models. Thanks to the partnership, Volvo customers will soon interact with their vehicles in a completely different way, according to the supplier. The large selection of Android apps will then offer connected services in and around the vehicle.

Important step
With the Google partnership and the integration of Android, we are taking an important strategic step. Google's platform and services will enhance the user experience with more options. Android, for its part, offers more flexibility from a developer perspective," explains Henrik Green, Senior Vice President Research & Development at Volvo Car Group.

Networking becomes reality
The partnership is an expression of the increasing convergence of the automotive and technology sectors. Vehicles are becoming more and more connected. Android as the base operating system will allow customers to customize their in-vehicle connectivity. "With Android, we gain a wealth of applications but retain our award-winning Volvo user interface. We then offer hundreds of popular apps and the best integration in this comprehensive connected environment," adds Henrik Green.

Other services conceivable
Volvo is also working with Google to retrofit the newer Volvo models with Google's local search, a location-based service. This will be done via an update to the Sensus navigation system. More news about the partnership and the Android operating system will be presented today, May 17, at I/O, Google's annual developer conference.
