Volvo Cars Vision 2020, according to which no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo from 2020 onwards, is one of the most ambitious safety targets within the automotive industry.
Negative impact on road safety
Research by the Volvo Car Group has shown that there are three main reasons that jeopardize the goal of zero serious injuries or fatalities in vehicles. Speeding is one of these key issues and has a particularly negative impact on road safety.
Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of the Volvo Car Group. "Through our research, we know where the main obstacles lie on the way to our goal of eliminating serious injuries and even deaths in our vehicles. We should do everything in our power, even if it means saving just one life."
Speeding, drugs and distractions
Håkan Samuelsson: "We want to start a discussion about whether car manufacturers have the right or perhaps even the obligation to install technology in their cars that changes driver behavior and prevents misconduct such as speeding, drug use or distractions. We do not yet have a definitive answer to this question, but we believe that we ourselves should take a leading role in this discussion and even be a pioneer."
Background: Millions of people receive speeding fines every year. Data from the US National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration shows that in 2017, around 25 percent of all fatal accidents in the US were caused by speeding.
Volvo will present further ideas on how to tackle these problems in Gothenburg on March 20, 2019.
