The Area View with 360-degree view, available as an option, shows the vehicle's surroundings.
SUV stands for Sport Utility Vehicle and is purely a marketing term. It refers to a variable vehicle with increased ground clearance and a self-supporting body. The design is based on off-roaders without the typical features such as a ladder frame, all-wheel drive and gear reduction. With its SUV offensive, Volkswagen aims to become the world's largest automaker.
Customers with different requirements
The SUV takes account of today's customer requirements and appeals to both van and station wagon customers. High variability, comfortable entry, compact size in relation to the load volume in a comparable price segment are the arguments. An SUV appears more powerful due to its large wheels and longer front end. The low loading sill with longer trunk length, which is very practical for transporting dogs, is more in favor of a station wagon.
The SUV segment is booming worldwide
The development in these segments shows a clear language: SUVs (including SUVs) are up 22.3 percent compared to 2017, compared to minivans and MPVs with a minus of 23.5 percent compared to 2017. No question, the SUV is booming worldwide.
In the U.S., the overall market shows 48 percent, with Volkswagen at 51 percent, up a whopping four percent. In Europe, the overall market is at 38 percent and Volkswagen at 33 percent with a plus of seven percent
In China, the overall market stands at 43 percent and Volkswagen at 21 percent (up seven percent). Worldwide, the total market is thus at 38 percent SUV and Volkswagen holds 25 percent of it.
Wolfsburg Tiguan undisputed No. 1
The best-selling SUV in Switzerland is the Tiguan, and its Allspace variant has been the undisputed Wolfsburg No. 1 in this segment for years. The Touareg is Volkswagen's most refined SUV and has been on sale as the third generation since fall 2018. The T-Roc is the Golf among SUVs. Since its launch in 2017, over 5170 cars have already been sold, and the sporty T-Roc R with 300 hp will be on the starting line in fall 2019 (AutoSprintCH reported).
The T-Cross is Volkswagen's latest SUV. As of the end of May, over 1,400 orders have already been placed, further confirming the trend toward SUVs.
Area View with 360-degree view creates safety
A new addition to the range is the camera-controlled Area View with 360-degree view, which can be used to check the vehicle's immediate surroundings on a monitor. The system makes maneuvering in particular much easier and safer.
