The second battery-electric car, the Honda e, and the Toyota Yaris came in second and third place respectively in the prestigious award. The winners were selected and honored in a video presentation in New York. In previous years, the award ceremony was always held as a large press event on the sidelines of the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS).

In addition to the World Car, the jury also honored the best vehicles in other award classes. The Honda e, for example, was the winner in the World Urban Car of the Year category, ahead of the Honda Jazz and the Toyota Yaris.

In the luxury car category (World Luxury Car), the Mercedes-Benz S-Class was chosen ahead of the Land Rover Defender and the Polestar 2.

The award for World Performance Car 2021 went to the Porsche 911 Turbo ahead of the Audi RS Q8 and the Toyota GR Yaris. For its design, the Land Rover Defender won the title of "2021 World Design Car of the Year.
