Environmental list: Winners 2020 at a glance
SUSTAINABILITY The Swiss Auto Environmental List rates new passenger cars that cause the least damage to the environment. Among electric cars, the Hyundai Ioniq, BMW i3 and Mitsubishi i-MiEV share first place. These cars are very energy-efficient, quiet and their battery is sized so that their production does not cause disproportionately high environmental damage. No less than twelve models crowd into fourth place, including the new Seat Mii electric and Skoda Citigo-e iV, JAC e-S2 and Mini Cooper SE.
With these and other new models, the electric market is slowly gaining momentum. Over the course of the year, the market supply will continue to increase, further accelerating the trend away from conventional gasoline or diesel drives toward electric cars.
Gasoline and diesel without a chance
Among the passenger car models with internal combustion engines, the top seven are equipped with a natural gas drive. The VW and Seat brands are the leaders here. Natural gas burns cleaner than gasoline or diesel, and 20 percent biogas from organic waste is added to the natural gas at Swiss filling stations. This proportion is therefore practically CO2-neutral.
Ranks 8 to 10 are occupied by models with hybrid (Toyota Prius and Corolla) or mild hybrid drive (Mazda 2). Models with pure gasoline or diesel engines no longer make it among the best.
The highest five-star rating can now only be awarded to models that emit no more than 115 g CO2/km and thus meet the 95 g target converted to the WLTP standard.
Conversion to fossil-free driving
The Auto Environmental List takes into account emissions of the greenhouse gas CO2, noise and, for cars with internal combustion engines, air pollutants. For electric cars, the environmental damage caused by battery production is included.
The Auto Environmental List gives the highest weighting to the contribution to climate heating by CO2 emissions. To limit global warming, transport must switch to fossil-free fuels. This is only possible with biogas or electric cars.
Online provides a database of vehicle data for around 1000 new passenger car models, including environmental ratings.
