After the newly composed Council of States last week approved the tax breaks for environmentally friendly fuels, which would have expired at the end of June 2020, the deal had to go back to the upper chamber. Unlike the National Council, the Council of States wanted to keep the tax breaks for natural gas, liquid gas and biogenic fuels until 2023 and not just until 2021; this difference was now debated in Bern.
Commission President and FDP National Councilor Christian Wasserfallen: "There are actually no more differences in the last round of differences. The entry into force is now chosen so that the law can actually enter into force immediately. "
Accordingly, the law will be valid until December 31, 2023 at the most and will not be linked to the deliberations and entry into force of the CO2 law.
Clarity on tax relief
Thus, following the Council of States, the National Council now also provides clarity regarding tax relief.
Federal Councilor Simonetta Sommaruga: "If the totally revised CO2 law enters into force on January 1, 2022, biogenic fuels will continue to be exempt from mineral oil tax until the end of 2023."
