Families without their own car who increasingly use car sharing, but also those who travel a lot with different cars, face the problem that many sharing providers do not make child seats available in all rental vehicles.
In addition, conventional seats are often difficult to transport. However, simple booster seats without back support are at best a stopgap for slightly older children. They offer no side impact protection whatsoever. Furthermore, the harness is not optimally positioned for the child.
Transport and space saving storage
In its current test, TCS also examined models whose development focused not only on use in a vehicle, but also on easy transport and space-saving storage.
Accurate testing of collapsible seats
The two foldable seats, the Chicco Fold & Go i-Size and the Mifold Hifold Fit and Fold Booster were tested in more detail by the TCS testers. Both are suitable for children from around four years of age and achieve the rating "recommendable". They thus clearly exceed the legal requirements.
Securing infants in infant carriers
The inflatable successor Hy5.1 TT was already tested last year and also rated "recommendable". It is approved for children up to 18 kilos from the age of four. The foldable Mifold Grab-and-Go (from four to twelve years) was already on the test list in 2017. However, like classic booster seats without back support, it offers no side impact protection and is therefore only recommended as a stopgap.
Infants up to about one and a half years of age are secured in infant carriers, and most can now be mounted on a stroller frame so that the journey between or to the vehicle can be made easily and the baby is optimally secured.
Results of the assessments at a glance
The Silver Cross Dream + Dream i-Size Base infant carrier is the only seat to receive an "excellent" rating, with 15 models achieving "highly recommended" and six others receiving a "recommendable" rating.
Although the Osann Flux Plus is the cheapest seat in the test, it only receives a "conditionally recommendable" rating. The Tex Baby Eris i-Size brings up the rear ("not recommended"). Although it is free of harmful substances, it has weaknesses in terms of operation and safety.
