TCS: These are the best winter tires 🎥

ADVICE For the first time, the TCS test focused on winter tires in the 205/60 R 16 dimension for SUVs in the compact class. The 225/45 R 17 size, a widely used dimension for compact vehicles, was also tested.

The mobility consultancy of the Touring Club Switzerland tested 32 winter tires. The products were evaluated in 19 test criteria. In terms of driving safety, the focus was not only on dry and wet performance, but also on the properties on winter roads. For this purpose, the tires were evaluated on snowy and icy roads. In the environmental performance criterion, the test tires' driving performance, abrasion, efficiency, tire weight, noise and sustainability were assessed. The tests were driven with a VW Golf 8 and with the VW T-Roc.

TCS advises choosing a winter tire that has received at least a "recommendable" rating.

16 Compact SUV products

For the first time, TCS tested winter tires of the dimension 205/60 R 16, which are suitable for compact SUVs such as the VW T-Roc, Audi Q2, Hyundai Kona, Renault Captur, Skoda Kamiq or Ford Ecosport. Basically, the conclusion on this dimension is positive. Two of the 16 tires cannot be recommended for purchase due to their weaknesses in driving safety, "not recommended" are the Lassa Snoways 4 and the Austone Athena SP-901.

16 Tires for lower middle class

The 225/45 R 17 size was also tested, one of the best-selling winter tire dimensions for lower mid-range models such as the VW Golf, Audi A3, Peugeot 308, Renault Mégane, Hyundai Ioniq and Fiat 500L. In this dimension, too, the verdict is positive. Of the 16 tires, four were rated "highly recommended," eleven "recommended," and only one "not recommended.

Important criteria for electric cars

Electric cars differ from conventionally powered vehicles in terms of technology and use. For an electric car, the tire should be optimized for rolling resistance. Wear resistance is also important, as high torque is available right from the start. For the electric car, one also pays attention to the noise emission factor with advantage. Since electric vehicles are heavier than cars with combustion engines, the tire must also be able to carry more weight. Regardless of the vehicle, your own driving behavior is the decisive factor when choosing tires.
