The Corona year 2020 is reflected in fuel sales at service stations, albeit less harshly than feared. In 2019, an average of around 1.371 million liters of fuel were still sold per service station, compared with around 1.225 million liters in 2020.

Supply of products for daily needs
On the other hand, the trend toward stores has continued. They play a particularly important role in the supply of products for everyday needs.

Roland Bilang, managing director of Avenergy Suisse, said, "The service station stores have proven to be an essential pillar of food and fuel supply during the lockdown."

Industry contributes to environmental protection
Stations with stores accounted for around 73 percent of total fuel sales in 2020. Last year, average sales at service stations with large stores accounted for around 2.359 million liters, and sales at smaller stores averaged 1.250 million liters.

The number of natural gas and LPG stations was down slightly in 2020, while the number of refueling stations with hydrogen dispensers increased. In 2019, only one H2 station was in operation; by the end of 2020, there were five. Roland Bilang: "The development shows that the industry is in the process of making its contribution to climate protection and is stepping up its efforts in this regard."

Switzerland has the densest service station network in Europe
Despite the slight decline in the number of service stations, Switzerland still has one of the densest service station networks in Europe. By comparison, Germany has around ten times the population, but the number of service stations is only around four times that in Switzerland.
