Compared to the previous year, especially the tested tires of the dimension (235/55 R17 103W) for van and mid-size SUV could surprise positively.
The 225/40 R18 92Y and 235/55 R17 103W summer tires were tested for 13 different criteria. These included driving tests on dry and wet road surfaces, as well as wear, noise development and fuel consumption.
A total of twelve tires were tested in the tire dimension 235/55 R17 103W.
Dimension middle class car
A total of 16 tires were tested in the tire dimension 225/40 R18 92Y. The tire dimension is suitable for mid-size cars such as Audi A3, VW Golf, Renault Megan, Mazda 3 or Peugeot 308.
All four tires rated "highly recommended" (Continental, Michelin, Goodyear and Maxxis) can be regarded as all-rounders. They consistently show good results in all safety and environmental criteria on both wet and dry roads.
The budget tire Rotalla Setulla S-Pace RU01, which is only available online in Switzerland, only received the rating "conditionally recommendable" due to its poor performance on wet roads.
Dimension vans and mid-size SUVs
A total of twelve tires were tested in the tire dimension 235/55 R17 103W. It is suitable for vans and mid-size SUVs such as the Audi Q3, VW Tiguan and T6, Ford Galaxy or Mercedes V-Class.
Four tires of this dimension were rated "highly recommended" (Michelin, Bridgestone, Maxxis and Pirelli), seven "recommended" and only one "not recommended". Due to the poor results on wet roads, TCS advises against buying the Laufenn S-Fit EQ tire.
Overall, the tire dimension 235/55 R17 was a positive surprise. In particular, the majority of the tires tested performed significantly better in wet conditions than the C tires for vans and transporters (215/65 R16C), which received consistently poor ratings in the previous year.
TCS therefore recommends replacing the standard C tires with the safer 235/55 R17 dimension for vans that are used for business or also privately as family vehicles.
