The case study of one of the world's leading accounting and consulting firms highlighted Rinspeed's concept vehicle "CitySnap" in the context of the ever-growing logistics demand and developments in urban areas.
Fewer delivery vehicles in use
Frank M. Rinderknecht,Rinspeed CEO and automotive visionary: "The scenarios show considerable savings potential. Not only could the modular delivery vehicle significantly reduce last-mile costs, but it could also cut the number of delivery vehicles by up to 50 percent. It would be a boon for congested inner cities."
For the time being with human driver
Fully automated driving will still be some time coming. That's why the electrically driven "CitySnap" is designed for a human driver for the time being. The driver's activity is limited to driving.
Later, computers and sensors will take its place in the self-driving vehicle. Loading and unloading of the "CitySnap" with the mobile packing stations is already automated today. The loading of the packing stations offers further automation potential.
Corner organic stores as points of sale
At the heart of the vehicle is a changeover system inspired by aviation, where it has been tested worldwide in all weather conditions (PCT patent pending).
In the "CitySnap" it makes completely new applications possible. Among other things, the desired service can now be delivered quickly and easily to the customer, no matter where he or she happens to be.
These can be transportable parcel stations that are accessible to customers for a certain period of time and parked in their neighborhood. Mobile points of sale such as corner stores are also conceivable.
Savings of six percent emissions
Thus, the use of the Rinspeed solution reduces the number of delivery vehicles required by up to 50 percent. In addition, this system saves six percent in CO2 emissions - per package!
CitySnap" also offers considerable potential for cost savings. Compared with conventional parcel delivery, costs are reduced by around 17 percent per parcel, a cost advantage that can benefit consumers.
Possible solution that can be implemented in the short term
The proof-of-concept vehicle, which will be presented to the global public in spring 2021, demonstrates a possible solution for innovative, sustainable and efficient delivery that can be implemented in the short term.
Frank M. Rinderknecht: "People want more and more convenience and simplicity in their lives."
The innovative transport solution offers both.
