What if you are now allowed to travel again and want to take your dog, cat or even horse on vacation? Vacations with the pet must be well planned, because a trip is in most cases associated with stress for the animal.
Animal protection law also the Road Traffic Act
The transport of dogs and cats in cars is subject not only to animal welfare laws but also to the Road Traffic Act. Under these, animals are considered cargo and must be secured so that they cannot endanger anyone during transport.
Loudspeakers near the animal should remain switched off, because dogs and cats have much more sensitive hearing than humans. In addition, an animal should never be left alone in the car.
Travel abroad with animals in bus and train
Dogs are allowed to travel on public transport in Switzerland. However, cantonal dog laws may stipulate that dogs must be kept on a leash on public transport and must also wear a muzzle.
When traveling abroad, you should inform yourself in advance about the laws that apply in the country you are traveling to. In many European countries, the dog must be kept on a leash in combination with a muzzle.
As a rule, dogs and cats may be transported by air. Whether the pet travels in the cabin or in the baggage compartment depends on its weight and the size of the transport container. On Swiss, dogs and cats weighing up to eight kilograms are allowed to travel in the cabin.
Veterinary import regulations
Customs and veterinary import regulations apply when importing animals into Switzerland. Dogs, horses and cats must be marked with a microchip in accordance with European ISO standards.
Likewise, necessary vaccinations must have been made and entered in the EU pet passport to be carried. The entry of young animals is also possible without rabies vaccination. However, the animals must be younger than twelve weeks.
