Snow chain manufacturers have invested a lot of know-how in the further development of their products in recent years. Ease of installation and handling in particular have been examined more closely.
In Europe, however, there are also various products that are offered as an alternative to snow chains. In Switzerland, however, only metal snow chains and the plastic alternative Easy Grip from Michelin were permitted in the case of a mandatory snow chain requirement.
Approval for first textile alternative
Now another product complies with Swiss regulations: the first Autosock textile anti-skid device. This is confirmed by the Swiss Dynamic Test Center (DTC) in Vauffelin. The DTC tested snow chains and alternative solutions on behalf of the Federal Roads Office.
The tested products must ensure starting, braking and lateral guidance on snow and ice. In addition, they must not cause excessive damage to the road.
The car sock has been officially approved as a snow chain alternative in Switzerland since December 1. As a textile product, it is lighter than conventional snow chains and easy to handle.
Chains still the safest means
However, TCS points out that snow chains are still the safest way to get around on roads covered in heavy snow. Chains should also only be mounted on winter tires.
For all-wheel drive vehicles, there is no fixed regulation on which axle the chains must be fitted. Snow chains on all four wheels are optimal. Manufacturers and sellers of alternative products can provide the customer with a copy of the DTC's certification of conformity so that they can be presented to the inspection bodies as evidence if required.
