Radar sensors: Safety up to level 4
FUTURE The Chinese car manufacturer SAIC Motor Corporation has commissioned ZF to develop a 4D full-range radar. From 2022, ZF will produce the radar sensors in China and supply them to SAIC for the R-series electric SUVs. The full-range radar perceives the vehicle's surroundings in four dimensions, including height, and is therefore as powerful as optical sensor cameras. In combination with these [...]
The full-range radar perceives the vehicle's surroundings in four dimensions, including height, and is therefore as powerful as optical sensor cameras. In combination with these technologies, the 4D radar offers the necessary safety and reliability for partially and highly automated driving, including Level 4.
Speed as the fourth measurement dimension
The 4D full-range radar offers a high resolution, including speed as an additional fourth measurement dimension. The high-resolution detection of the traffic situation helps a vehicle on a highway, for example, to recognize the end of a traffic jam under a bridge at an early stage.
What's more, the ZF radar receives around ten data points from a pedestrian instead of just one or two compared to typical car radars. The radar can even detect the movement of individual limbs and the direction in which the pedestrian is moving.
