Porsche: First delivery bottlenecks due to time constraints

SCHNELLSCHUSS Pure schadenfreude among many competitors - Porsche can no longer deliver new cars because the required limit values are not correct. The background is now becoming clearer. A test engineer measuring exhaust emissions at the tailpipe. From 1 September 2018, the limits of the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) will apply.

This could be the first sign that the deadline of September 1, 2018, is overburdening the entire industry. For the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), the consequences of a hasty introduction of EU regulations are now becoming apparent for the first time.

The VDA points out today that more than 500 WLTP approvals are outstanding by the September 1, 2018 deadline because the parties involved have not complied. Production losses are now imminent.

Timely notification of potential problems
In its detailed statement, the VDA points out that it had always warned of this situation: "As early as December 2016, the VDA was very critical of the resolutions of the Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles (TCMV) at the time, because the planned deadlines interfered with ongoing product cycles and thus deprived car manufacturers of any ability to plan. There was a lack of political will to recognize the limits of what is feasible.

The VDA said at the time: "Rather, the impression arises that the EU Commission wants to demonstrate its ability to act against the backdrop of the events of the past year and has lost its sense of proportion in the process."

The Commission had thus missed its own targets of "better legislation" and "more growth and employment". A conversion of all models in current production had already been assessed in 2016 as "not possible in the given time".

The Real Drive Emissions will apply from September 1, 2019
The VDA is also complaining about the deadline of September 1, 2018, because the RDE (Real Driving Emissions) requirements will apply to all new registrations one year later on September 1, 2019.

"It would have made more sense if Brussels had also chosen this deadline for the WLTP specifications instead of acting in a short-sighted manner and thus causing companies major difficulties. 'Better regulations' look different," explains the VDA.

Conversion of the entire Porsche model range
The official statement from the Stuttgart-based car manufacturer: "The introduction of the new emissions legislation makes it necessary to convert the model range to petrol particulate filters (OPF) and re-typing by 1 September 2018 at the latest. This will temporarily result in a limited range of models. In the course of the changeover, there will be a staggered introduction of model derivatives in Europe."
