Occasions: Record in the third quarter
IT'S GOING UP The decline in the second quarter has been compensated, and the signs point to a record year: With 190,362 used cars traded in the third quarter, the trade has set a record. Almost all brands can be pleased about a partly even strong plus, especially Kia (+33.4%), Jeep (+24.3%), Jaguar (+18.7%) as well as Mercedes-Benz (+19.7%), Seat (+19.4%), Porsche (+18.7%) and BMW (+16.8%).
René Mitteregger, data specialist at auto-i-dat: "This is largely due to the good used cars that are offered at attractive prices."
Volkswagen continues to lead the field
However, the hierarchy in the Swiss used car market remained unchanged in the third quarter: Most of the second-hand vehicles traded were from VW (24,991), followed by BMW (15,336), Audi (14,035), Mercedes-Benz (13,795), Opel (9917), Renault (8378), Peugeot (8024), Ford (7745), Skoda (7137) and Fiat (7064).
Skoda thus entered the top 10 for the first time, displacing Toyota. Slight declines in trade were only recorded by the Lexus (-1.9%), Lancia (-0.4%), Saab (-0.4%) and Subaru (-0.2%) brands.
Service lives are very different
The fact that the used car market is more dynamic than the new car market is also due to the fact that idle times have decreased. Currently, a used vehicle stands for an average of 77 days until it finds a new owner.
However, the idle times of the individual brands and even more so of the individual models vary greatly. The top 3 brands in terms of short idle times in 2018 were Dacia (56 days idle time on average), Seat (66 days) and Tesla (66 days). At the other end of the rankings are Infiniti (260 days), Lada (238 days) and MG (232 days).
