Used cars: Small market for Stromer

Despite the daily flood of positive reports about alternative drive systems, they account for only 3.5 percent of all vehicles purchased since 2010. At Tesla, according to observations by the industry information service auto-i-dat, a third of all vehicles currently out of circulation are no longer offered. The loss in value is considerable.

The proliferation of vehicles with alternative drives has experienced a strong dynamization in recent years, primarily for political reasons: From 2020, a CO2 target value of 95 grams per kilometer will apply as an average value across the entire respective fleet of a manufacturer. This requires a significantly higher proportion of vehicles with an alternative drive system.

The goal is a market share of ten percent by 2020
This is one of the reasons why auto-schweiz has set itself the goal of achieving a market share of ten percent of new vehicles for passenger cars with electric or hybrid drives by 2020. A look at the current status shows just how ambitious this target is: in the first four months of 2018, the share of new passenger cars with a hybrid or electric drive was 6 percent. However, this also has to do with the fact that the range of (attractive) electric vehicles on offer is not yet that broad. According to the manufacturers, this range will be expanded over the next few years.

Diesel and gasoline engines will continue to hold their own
Assuming an average operating time of more than nine years per vehicle before it is either exported to the East or Africa or even scrapped, we have to look at the structure of all vehicles currently on Swiss roads up to the year 2009. The result: 96.5 percent of all these vehicles are - as before - powered by gasoline (59.8 percent) or diesel (36.8 percent). The rest - just 3.5 percent - are powered by alternatives.

Different service lives for common models
Even though the market for electric cars is still relatively young, there is already a second-hand market that is developing very differently. The service lives of the current models could hardly be more different, although it should be noted that young electric vehicles have a shorter service life than older ones. Older electric vehicles are currently finding it virtually impossible to find a new owner. And: Almost half of all electric vehicles are owned by companies and therefore enter the second-hand market with a delay. At Tesla, for example, a third of all vehicles currently out of service are no longer offered. The same applies to the BMW i3. But even more important for the dealer is the fact that last month only 17 percent of electric vehicle owners who sold their vehicle bought an electric vehicle again.
