With the sporty harbinger of the ID. Family, which makes its debut on the road this year, Romain Dumas set the all-time record at the famous Pikes Peak hill climb in the USA in June 2018. Now Volkswagen is setting its sights on the world's most difficult race track with the four-time winner of the Nürburgring 24 Hours.
The electric prototype from Wolfsburg is powered by two electric motors with a system output of 500 kW (680 hp) and weighs less than 1100 kilograms including the driver.
In order to prepare carefully for the record drive, an intensive testing and development program is carried out on various race tracks in the spring. The ID. R will be further developed specifically in the area of aerodynamics.
Under or over six minutes?
The current best time for all-electric vehicles on the 20.832-kilometer Nordschleife with its 75 bends is 6'45.90 minutes. This corresponds to an average speed of just under 185 km/h. It was set by Briton Peter Dumbreck at the wheel of an NIO EP9 in 2017.
There's no question that Dumas will ideally pulverize it just as he did with Sébastien Loeb's previous record at Pikes Peak.
