Engineers at Nissan go to great lengths to develop the right smell in the car. In the new Qashqai, for example, which was recently launched, Nissan paid particular attention to the ambience. They also had to ensure that there were no unpleasant odors.

The interior scent of a car is a decisive criterion in the development and testing process of new models.

Odor evaluation at the Technical Centre Europe
Peter Karl Eastland, senior engineer for odor evaluation at Nissan Technical Centre Europe, he has an extremely keen sense of smell. Together with a team of technicians, he is now responsible at Nissan for ensuring that the smell on board new cars is positively noticeable.

Peter Karl Eastland: "We want to offer the customer the best sensory experience. To this end, work is done throughout the development phase of a vehicle to carefully analyze the materials used - including plastics and adhesives."

Collaboration for a global standard
If it turns out that a new material has a negative impact on the overall ambience in the interior, Eastland and his colleagues look for alternatives. Peter Karl Eastland also works with teams in Atsugi (Japan) and Farmington Hills (USA) to ensure a global standard for odor evaluation.

Says Peter Karl Eastland, "We make sure a new Nissan delivers a sense of satisfaction and joy every time our customers drive their vehicle."
