The Swiss automotive market remained largely stable in the first half of 2017, showing only a slight year-on-year decline even in July.

After an increase of 0.2 percent after five and 0.6 percent after six months, the cumulative market for new passenger cars at the end of July was 0.2 percent below the previous year's result.

Only marginally less
In the first seven months, 183,803 new cars were registered - 308 units fewer than in the comparable period of 2016. In view of the very good previous year, this represents a remarkable result. "This means that the result forecast by our members of a total of 305,000 new passenger cars for 2017 is more than within reach," summarized auto-schweiz Director Andreas Burgener.

All-wheel drive on the upwind
Passenger cars with all-wheel drive continue to enjoy a clear upward trend. After seven months, their market share of 46.1 percent is 1.9 percentage points above the overall figure for the previous year and thus on course for a record. In absolute terms, 84,821 new cars with all-wheel drive were registered in the current year - 5771 vehicles more than in the previous year.

Grow alternative
Alternative drive systems grew slightly to 4.9 percent of the market (+0.5 percent). Cars with hybrid drives and purely electric passenger cars accounted for the largest share of this increase. The detailed figures by brand are available at www.auto.swiss.ch available.
