A perfect start for Sébastien Buemi: three and a half months after winning the title in London, the Formula E champion from Aigle and the Renault team kicked off the third season of the FIA Formula E Championship with a victory in Hong Kong. A beaming winner with the Hong Kong ePrix trophy: Sébastien Buemi continues where he left off as Formula E champion at the end of June. The signs are still pointing to victory for him.

Around 30,000 spectators along the Hong Kong harbor provided a worthy setting for the start of the third season of the FIA Formula E Championship. Sébastien Buemi lined up as champion for the first time and left the venue as championship leader once again.

Initially, it did not look like the Vaud native, who had started from fourth place, would win. But the Brazilian Nelson Piquet Jr., who had started the race from pole position, had to take the emergency exit after an evasive maneuver. British driver Sam Bird, who was leading the race after him, was unable to get the second electric race car going after the pit stop. The Renault team had brought Buemi in early to change cars during the safety car phase, which proved to be the right strategy. Sébastien Buemi: "I had to drive very energy-efficiently, but the second car was also better on the road due to the setup change. But I don't think I could have done one more lap.

Impressive backdrop for the street circuit in Hong Kong: Sébastien Buemi leads the field in his Renault Z.E. 16, which, like all third-generation electric racing cars, stands out with its striking front wing.

Team Abt Schaeffler Audi Sport showed a strong performance
The Abt Schaeffler Audi Sport team also put in a masterful performance in terms of driving and strategy, pushing Lucas di Grassi up to second place despite a repair stop. Third place went to Nick Heidfeld from Switzerland in the Mahindra electric car. The high-caliber championship continues as it ended in London in June: with a duel between the Swiss and the Brazilian, between Renault and Audi. The next race will take place on November 12, 2016 on the Marrakesh street circuit in Morocco.
