Green Apple
The newly developed energy storage system makes the Johan Cruijff Arena one of the most sustainable stadiums in the world.
Green Apple
The Green Apple Award was established in 1994. It has established itself as recognition for environmental protection efforts.

The Green Apple Award-winning project is the result of a collaboration between Mobility House, Nissan, Eaton and the Johan Cruijff Arena, and is also supported by the Amsterdam Climate and Energy Fund (AKEF). The 3-megawatt storage system at the largest multi-purpose stadium in the Netherlands provides reliable and efficient power supply and usage. Combining Eaton energy conversion units and a storage mass consisting of the equivalent of 148 Nissan Leaf batteries, the storage system provides a sustainable energy concept. It also supports the cycle for batteries from electric vehicles.

Fewer diesel generators needed
The energy storage system has a total capacity of 3 megawatts. This is enough to supply several thousand households with electricity. The generous design also offers the advantage that the electricity generated by the 4200 photovoltaic modules on the roof of the stadium can be optimally stored and used. Since the system also provides an emergency and backup power supply. Therefore, the use of diesel generators can be limited and the power grid is relieved because power peaks can be easily compensated.
