Into the future electrically with the Skoda Vision E
SKODA's first electric study, the Vision E, debuts at the Auto Shanghai 2017 currently underway, offering a glimpse of the Czech manufacturer's electric mobility strategy, which aims to launch five electric vehicle models by 2025. Skoda's appearance at Auto Shanghai 2017 (until April 28) will be dominated by the electric transformation: With the "Vision E" study, the company is providing a concrete, brand-specific preview of the individual mobility of the future for the first time. The emotionally styled, five-door SUV coupé drives up to 500 kilometers in pure electric mode and achieves Level 3 for autonomous driving.
Expansion of the E-pallet
Skoda is systematically driving forward the electrification of its model range and will offer five all-electric models in various segments by 2025. With a length of 4645 millimeters, a width of 1917 millimeters and a height of 1550 millimeters, the Skoda Vision E exudes a large presence, according to the supplier. Thanks to the long wheelbase of 2850 millimeters and the short overhangs at the front and rear, the engineers have created a generous interior. The forward-looking vehicle concept combines the elevated seating position and generous space typical of SUV models with a dynamic-looking silhouette and a gently sloping roof line in the style of a coupe.
Technically up to date
Thanks to the system output of 225 kW, the vehicle accelerates dynamically and without deceleration. The top speed is 180 km/h. The powerful lithium-ion batteries and optimum recuperation enable a range of up to 500 kilometers. Thanks to intelligent management, the two electric motors cooperate with maximum efficiency and drive all four wheels. The front and rear wheels are driven as needed to ensure maximum stability, safety and dynamics at all times.
Autonomous level 3
According to the latest surveys, around 15 percent of all new cars could be driving fully autonomously as early as 2030. The Skoda Vision E concept car meets the requirements for Level 3 of autonomous driving. It can act autonomously in traffic jams, cover distances on freeways using autopilot, maintain or avoid lanes, carry out overtaking maneuvers, independently search for free parking spaces and park and unpark on its own. Various sensors with different ranges and different cameras are available to monitor the traffic situation.
Future prospects
Skoda is developing its own vehicle concepts for purely electric mobility based on the MEB Group platform (including VW/Audi). The electrification of the model range will start as early as 2019 with the launch of the Superb with plug-in hybrid drive. Shortly thereafter, in 2020, the first purely electrically powered Skoda series vehicle will follow. By 2025, the brand will then expand its range to five purely electrically powered cars for various segments.
