MFK: What do the three letters mean?

MFK
The first inspection takes place around five years after a car is first put on the market.

Once a vehicle has been placed on the market, it is subject to a statutory inspection obligation, the motor vehicle inspection (MFK). The first inspection takes place around five years after the vehicle is first put on the market, the second inspection three years later and then every two years.

An MFK is not only important for one's own car, but also plays a role in the trust placed in the supplier when buying a used car: sales advertisements often contain the note that an inspection was recently carried out on the vehicle.

Minimum legal requirements

Markus Peter, responsible for Technology & Environment at the AGVS: "Ab MFK means that the car fulfills the legal minimum technical requirements and is approved for use on the roads. But caution is advised here."

Information in the service booklet
From MFK is a minimum guarantee, but not a guarantee. Because the inspection does not examine, for example, the quality of engine oil, brake fluid or the condition of the air filter. The MFK also provides little information about other work that is part of a service and ensures smooth operation of the car, such as the timely replacement of the timing belt.

Very important: It is always worth taking a look at the service booklet. If there are any doubts, you should look for another car.

Occasion warranty as security
If you want to be on the safe side when buying, have the car professionally appraised and get advice from an expert.

Markus Peter: "AGVS garages not only offer inspected used vehicles, but also know what service work has recently been carried out on the vehicle and whether major work is still to be done. In addition, many garages offer a used vehicle guarantee as a further guarantee.
