Market: Schweizer family likes to ride on two wheels
MARKET FOR MOTORCYCLES Following record sales during the Corona years 2020/21 and after the changes to driver's license categories at the beginning of 2021, the Swiss motorcycle and scooter market has settled at a high level in 2022.
With 48,693 new registrations, the Swiss motorcycle and scooter market in 2022 is well above the pre-pandemic level. Without the global supply and raw material problems at the manufacturers, the result would have been even better.
Although the 2022 result represents a drop of 13.6 percent compared to the record year of 2021 with 56,376 units, it also represents an increase of 17.4 percent compared to 2019. The popularity of the motorized two-wheeler thus remains unbroken among the Schweizer family.
125cc class with strong growth
Since the models in the class up to 125 cm, which are limited to an engine output of 15 hp (11 kW)3 Since 16-year-olds have been allowed to ride 125s in Switzerland since January 1, 2021, as in the rest of Europe, the market in this category has literally exploded. In 2022, 6516 of the total 28,032 new registrations were in the 125cc class. Only the upper motorcycle class with more than 1000 cm3 displacement was even more in demand at 6762 units.
Era of all-electric scooters is here
The electric age has arrived for scooters, which are mainly used for short trips. In 2022, the share of electrically powered new scooters amounted to 2835 units, or 15.7 percent of the total scooter market, which declined by 3.1 percent.
In the case of larger motorcycles, which are mainly used for leisure purposes, electric technology is still unable to gain a foothold for reasons of range and space, and consequently for lack of attractive offerings. The new motorcycle and scooter season kicks off with the Motofestival in Bern from February 23 to 26.
