Market: Diesel Occasions in Trend
SATISFACTION The used car trade in Switzerland is still going very well. This is true even in view of the fact that 2018 did not exceed the previous year's figures. For the Swiss used car market, 2018 was not a record year: 781,776 vehicles changed hands, just under one percent less than the previous year (788,590), but [...]
For the Swiss used car market, 2018 was not a record year: 781,776 vehicles changed hands, just under one percent fewer than in the previous year (788,590), but significantly more than in 2016 (751,776).
Not much demand for coupes
auto-i-dat ag observed the smallest declines in the luxury class and in the SUV and off-road vehicle segment. The demand for used cars in 2018 was lower in the luxury class on the one hand, and in the vans, MPVs and, above all, coupés on the other.
Deliveries delayed due to WLTP
The fact that the previous year's figures could not be exceeded is mainly due to a slump in the third quarter of the year, which is directly related to the delay in delivery due to the testing bottlenecks for the new WLTP measurement procedure - "As a result, there were simply too few new cars on sale and thus too few good used cars on the market," explains René Mitteregger, data specialist at auto-i-dat ag.
Surprising diesel comeback
Diesel is still an issue for both new and used cars. Particularly in the area of heavier vehicles (SUVs/off-road vehicles), those vehicles are now coming onto the used car market that were purchased before the diesel crisis broke out. And they are selling well, observes René Mitteregger, data specialist at auto-i-dat ag: "We have indications that used car buyers are increasingly opting for a diesel again".
Volkswagen is particularly popular
It is therefore not surprising that the best-selling brand in terms of both new and used cars is Volkswagen. The following places among the used cars: BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Opel. Only in sixth place follow brands from other countries: Renault (6th place), Peugeot (7th), Ford (8th) and Fiat (9th). Toyota, the first Japanese manufacturer, follows in 10th place. The industry expects 2019 to be a good year for used cars.
