Market: campers beautiful the current balance

LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL The situation on the commercial vehicle market in Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein has stabilized somewhat. A total of 28,221 new registrations represent a decrease of 5,351 units compared to 2019, making up for part of the market decline after a 21.5 percent shortfall compared to the previous year's result at the halfway point. The camping boom continues unabated despite - or perhaps because of - the pandemic situation.

This made up for part of the market decline, after a 21.5% drop on the previous year's result at the halfway point. However, the crisis is far from over, as evidenced by the decline in the number of light and heavy commercial vehicles by around a fifth.

Only campers benefited from the pandemic situation, increasing by 12.9%.

Less demand for higher weight classes
For light commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tons, there was a decline of 5103 vehicles to 20,075 new registrations after three quarters. The higher weight classes between 2.6 and 3.5 tons gross weight in particular are in significantly lower demand.

Many companies are reluctant to invest in renewing their vehicle fleets, which is no surprise given the overall economic situation.

Minus reduced compared to half-year
Compared to the first nine months of 2019, one in five new registrations of heavy-duty transport vehicles is also missing.

2719 new trucks and articulated lorries have been put on the road since the beginning of the year, 678 fewer than in the same period last year. It was not possible to reduce the minus compared to the half-year balance.

Growing interest in motorhomes
Due to sales of motorhomes, registrations of new passenger transport vehicles rose by 5,427 in the first nine months of 2020, with campers alone accounting for 4,902 registrations. An increase that compensates for the decline in cars, minibuses and other passenger transport vehicles.

Decrease of 68,059 new enrollments
Together with the 163,556 passenger cars, a total of 191,777 new motor vehicles were put on the road in Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein in the first nine months of the current year.

This is a decrease of 68,059 new enrolments compared to the same period last year.
