The Kia Soul is now only available with a fully electric drive. The Korean is on display at the Geneva Motor Show (March 7 to 17).
Although the previous year's record was narrowly missed by 3.4%, you have to go back six years to find the next best start to the year for the German car market. Alternative drive systems accounted for a high 8.2% of the market in January, with electric vehicles almost doubling their market share compared to the previous year.
Demand for alternative drives
Exactly 434 all-electric passenger cars were registered for the first time last month, an increase of 77.1% compared to January 2018. The market share was therefore 2.1%, compared to 1.1% a year ago. The excellent start to the year for alternative drive systems was rounded off by hybrid engines consisting of combustion engines and electric motors, whose share of new registrations shot up to 6.1%. A year earlier, this figure had stood at 4.3 percent. Natural gas/biogas (CNG) powered models accounted for the rest of the alternative solutions.
The goal is over 300,000 redemptions
Christoph Wolnik from the importers' association auto-schweiz: "We are very satisfied with the start to the year. Not only are the January figures a good signal, but the development of incoming orders also gives our members a positive outlook for the rest of the year. We definitely want to exceed 300,000 redemptions again."
The future of electricity at the Geneva Motor Show
And the expert's forecasts: "In 2019, we will see a significant increase in rechargeable electric vehicles, i.e. plug-in hybrids and all-electric models. Next year, these so-called plug-in vehicles are expected to account for ten percent of the new car market. Christoph Wolnik continues: "Over the course of the year, many exciting new models from various brands will be arriving at dealerships. Of course, the Geneva Motor Show in March will once again provide an overview of the dynamic developments." Details of the brand development in the Switzerland can be seen from the statistics.
