Automated and partially automated vehicles have the potential to make road traffic safer, more efficient and more comfortable. Interest in this technology is therefore great; however, many technical and non-technical questions are still open.
Central role for automated driving
As part of a project coordinated by the Swiss Competence Center for Energy Research in Mobility, Lexus and Empa have agreed to collaborate on testing sensors for automated vehicles.
Sensor systems play a central role in automated driving. By detecting the vehicle's environment, they provide the information needed to steer the vehicle safely through traffic.
Weather and environmental influences
In real-life use, however, these sensors are exposed to a wide variety of weather and environmental influences as well as mechanical stresses. As part of the collaboration, Lexus has provided Empa with a test vehicle that will be equipped with sensors and a data acquisition system in order to investigate the behavior of the sensors in real-life operation in detail.
