KW suspensions: Tesla drivers are new target group
BETTER HANDLING Suspension specialist KW Automotive has developed a chassis for the Tesla Model Y with adjustable compression and rebound damping. The Variant 3 coilover suspension for the electric SUV is now available.
For more and more Tesla models, KW Automotive is developing coilovers with adaptive and manually adjustable dampers. While Model S and Model 3 coilovers are already available, now coming to the Essen Motor Show (Nov. 27-Dec. 5) is the stainless steel KW coilover Variant 3 for the Model Y.
The compact electric SUV benefits from optionally adjustable suspension in compression and rebound damping, especially in handling and in supporting the high body structure. In the case of the rear-wheel-drive Tesla Model 3, for example, the electromobility specialist Nextmove from Leipzig proved that the installation of a KW coilover suspension even increases the range by up to seven percent in conjunction with the standard wheel-tire combination.
Stepless lowering by 25 and 50 millimeters
Within the scope of the parts certificate, the Model Y AWD can be steplessly lowered between 25 and 50 millimeters on both axles by the coilover suspension.
A coilover suspension for all Model Y cars with rear-wheel drive is already in preparation. This will be available in spring 2022. The German-made coilover variant 3 will be offered at a price of 3120 Swiss francs.
Tuning with two-stage multi-valve technology
The KW dampers used for the all-wheel-drive Tesla Y, which weighs up to two tons, feature two-stage multi-valve technology that allows the damping forces to be tuned.
KW Brand Manager Jonas Ehrmann: "With Variant 3, we use low-speed and high-speed valves for the compression and rebound forces. We were totally surprised by the high demand for coilovers. Since we also offer a suspension for the Model 3, we are appealing to a completely new target group that previously never considered buying a coilover suspension or modifying anything at all on a production vehicle."
