Honda is unveiling the CR-V Hybrid prototype at the IAA. The vehicle will be Honda's first SUV equipped with a hybrid system in Europe and its design gives a preview of the European version of the CR-V.
Striking shapes
The prototype CR-V Hybrid is wider, taller and longer than its predecessor. The new SUV also features slim A-pillars, a more sharply contoured hood and rear end, while the front end reflects the current Honda design.
Without gearbox
The i-MMD hybrid system (Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive) features an electric drive motor, a 2.0-liter i-VTEC four-cylinder gasoline engine with direct drive, and a separate generator. The hybrid system does not require a conventional transmission and instead has a single fixed drive gear. The system controls the consumption of fuel and electrical energy in such a way that the driver himself does not have to make any adjustments to the three driving modes "electric drive," "hybrid drive" and "gasoline engine drive."
Efficiency a priority
For inner-city driving, the vehicle will mostly switch between hybrid and electric drive for optimal efficiency. Engine mode is used actively for rapid acceleration when needed and for efficient driving at higher speeds. Other powertrain options in the European lineup use a 1.5-liter VTEC TURBO gasoline engine, this will be available with manual six-speed or continuously variable CVT transmission. The official market launch of the new SUV in Europe is scheduled for 2018.
