Hyundai: Fight against plastics in the sea 🎥

PARTNERSHIP Following the successful launch in 2021, Hyundai is extending its partnership with the Healthy Seas organization for another year. In doing so, the automaker reaffirmed its commitment to combating marine pollution.

Hyundai Motor and the marine conservation organization Healthy Seas are extending their partnership. Through this collaboration, they are tackling marine pollution, promoting marine ecosystems and supporting a sustainable circular economy.

Collection actions with beach cleanups
Last year's joint actions ranged from trash collection events with beach cleanups and scuba dives to educational programs that taught children and local groups about the importance of keeping the world's oceans clean.

Veronika Mikos, Director Healthy Seas: "Thanks to the renewal of our partnership with Hyundai, we will also be able to make an even greater positive impact on the environment in 2022. And we can realize a next dream by becoming active in Asia as well."

Floor mats are made from plastic waste
The inaugural event in Ithaca, Greece, is considered Healthy Seas' largest project to date. Thanks to 45 participants, 20 divers and 15 organizations, the event cleaned four beaches and two bays and recovered five tons of ghost nets, 32 tons of metal and 39 tons of plastic waste.

But the partnership's activities went beyond cleanup. The collected waste was processed into the sustainable nylon Econyl, which is used to make the floor mats in the Ioniq 5.

Prevention of marine pollution
In addition to the cleanup campaigns, the partnership also held educational events for future generations. Last year, for example, 900 children learned about the importance of protecting the oceans and how to prevent further marine pollution.

Michael Cole, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Europe: "What has been achieved so far with this partnership has been a very positive first step. Now, in turn, I am excited about the ambitious plans Hyundai and Healthy Seas have to tackle marine pollution."
