COTY: The Opel Astra was able to prevail against 40 competitors and can now carry the coveted title.

"With the new Astra, we are entering a new era at Opel, and the victory in this year's 'Car of the Year' competition shows that we are on the right track," said Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann. "We are proud to receive this prestigious award from leading motoring journalists."

In total, more than 40 new models took part in the prestigious competition, including sports cars, premium saloons and SUVs. Since its market launch last fall, the new Astra has already won major international titles such as the "SAFETYBEST 2015" and the "Golden Steering Wheel 2015". In addition, the compact class bestseller achieved the maximum rating of five stars in the Euro NCAP crash test.

Both the Astra five-door and Sports Tourer versions of the new title-winner are based on a completely new lightweight vehicle architecture. Under the hood, only the latest generation of diesel and petrol engines provide powerful acceleration and lots of driving pleasure.

The "European Car of the Year" award has been presented since 1964. This is the fifth time Opel has won the "Car of the Year" title.
