Genesis: Hydrogen becomes an issue

FUTURE Hyundai's premium Genesis brand is specifying its future drive strategy: from 2025, all new models will be zero-emission vehicles, and from 2030 there will be no more vehicles with conventional drive systems. Next year, the GV60 crossover will be the first Genesis model with an all-electric powertrain.

However, the Koreans are not only relying on battery-electric drive, but also on hydrogen - for example, new fuel cell systems with higher output.

Background: Hydrogen vehicles, unlike electric cars, can be refueled in a few minutes, and they did not require heavy battery packs, which not only bring disadvantages in terms of driving dynamics and reduce efficiency, but are also environmentally questionable.

Development with sports car manufacturer Rimac
While the GV60 crossover will be the brand's first electric-drive model next year (AutoSprintCH reported), a derivative of the X Concept luxury coupé study (center gallery) will be launched with a high-performance hydrogen drive system. The drive technology is being developed jointly with the Croatian sports car manufacturer Rimac.

Difference from other premium brands
This strategy sets Genesis apart from other premium brands that reject an openness to technology and want to forgo research into alternatives to the battery-electric powertrain.

The brand is just being launched in Europe with four model series that have classic combustion engines: The G70 sports sedan and G80 luxury sedan are powered by gasoline or diesel engines, as are the GV70 (right gallery) and GV80 (left gallery) SUV models.
