Genesis: The hood of the G90 has style

TECHNOLOGY The top-of-the-range G90 model from Genesis combines modern technology and traditional craftsmanship. One of the most remarkable design features is the characteristic clamshell hood.

The huge hood is one of the special technical features of the G90 model.

The hood is an example of the bold style with which this model has already won several design awards. The 2.6 square meter aluminum shell is the largest component of its kind currently used in series production of cars worldwide. Thanks to this design, the hood connects seamlessly to the front fenders.

Jin Kim, head of the Genesis Design research team: "With the G90, we wanted to emphasize the youthful feel and the delicate design elements in the styling of the vehicle. The clamshell hood expresses this perfectly. It is a timeless automotive feature that has been implemented with a new approach to create something unique and elegant at the same time."

Practical tricks for production

Thanks to Genesis' expertise in pressing body parts and roll hemming, as well as considerable investment in modern forming technology, the Korean manufacturer has succeeded in producing a body part that is larger than a standard door frame. However, numerous technical difficulties had to be overcome during the development process.

Due to the high temperatures required for coloring the hood, for example, there was a risk of thermal deformation, which could have resulted in gaps between the hood and doors. To counteract this, the hinges were reinforced so that the dimensional tolerance could be maintained during production. And to improve rigidity, a C-shaped rail was attached externally to the hood and connected with elastic seals, reducing the gap between the components and achieving a flush finish.

Elegant sporty Gran Turismo

Luc Donckerwolke, Chief Creative Officer of the Genesis brand: "The design team has made the new model attractive by giving it the design of an elegant and sporty Gran Turismo. Added to this are technical refinements such as the aluminum clamshell hood and the narrow quad headlights with micro-lens array technology."

The sales price for the G90 starts at 129,300 francs, for the long wheelbase model at 139,400 francs.
