Ford: Electric racer from virtual studio

Ford shows how the ultimate racing car is created on a home computer in a virtual design studio. Even during the crisis, vehicle development was kept on track. The Fordzilla P1 project is creating a bolide with an all-electric drive concept.

To this end, designers worked on new vehicles in a virtual studio. Using VR headsets, they created computer-aided vehicle designs in a digital environment, since working with real workpieces, such as clay models, was not possible.

Survey of the communities
The team also worked on virtual sketches for a special e-racing car developed specifically for the Team Fordzilla P1 project. The captains of the Fordzilla teams from Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the UK, as well as their communities, were actively involved in the development of the car with surveys.

The resulting design concept received more than 220,000 votes in an Internet poll. Completion is scheduled for mid-June.

Completely new design processes

Amko Leenarts, Director Design Ford of Europe: "Collaboration is an integral part of design. We need to be able to try things out, share ideas and get feedback. With virtual reality, we can do just that, even from home. We're working with completely new design processes that lead to extraordinary results."

Designs from the driver's point of view
Ford also uses virtual reality to show vehicle interiors. 360° sketches are a tool that designers can use to present and share their designs. The designs can be experienced in 3D from the driver's and passengers' perspective.

While design teams are gradually returning to their workstations, virtual reality will still be used for global collaborations and as a complement to traditional processes.
