Natural gas as a fuel: CNG rolling in the trend

The Association of European Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA) recorded exactly 69,899 newly registered passenger cars powered by CNG (compressed natural gas) last year. This corresponds to an increase of six percent compared to 2019.

Looking back a little further, the trend is even more encouraging: from 2017 to 2019, growth in the environmentally friendly form of mobility was as high as 39 percent.

Metano or biogas in Italy
The number 1 in Europe is and remains Italy, with around 1,200 filling stations where Metano or biogas can be refueled. 38,615 new CNG vehicles were put on the road, and the market share in Europe's fourth-largest car market has been around two percent for years.

Sweden and Spain in trend
Countries such as Sweden and Spain are also reporting rising sales figures. In Spain (5476 new registrations, up 45.9 percent), VW subsidiary Seat produces a wide range of CNG models, while Sweden (5337, up 65 percent) has been promoting the production of biogas for years and is now the world leader with a biogas share of 94 percent at CNG filling stations.

Switzerland also with strong growth
According to ACEA, 1249 CNG cars were sold in Switzerland in the same period. Here, too, the growth is striking: plus 55 percent!
