Energy label: New regulation as of January 1

With the partial revision of the Energy Efficiency Ordinance (EnEV), the Federal Council has decided to reclassify the energy efficiency categories. From January 1, 2020, unladen weight will no longer be taken into account. Previously, unladen weight was taken into account with a weighting of 30 percent.

Energy label
The energy label is now clearer and easier to understand for consumers and businesses.

Energy consumption is important
Now only the absolute energy consumption is decisive, which will lead to major shifts in the evaluation of individual vehicles.

The AGVS, which took part in the consultation process for this partial revision of the EnEV, understands this change.

Adjustment of the CO2 target value
Markus Peter is responsible for technology and the environment at AGVS. He welcomes the simplification of the look and content of the energy label.

Markus Peter: "This simplification is a clear improvement and is in the interests of both the trade and the manufacturers. Swiss garage owners also welcome the adjustment of the CO2 target value by 21 percent compared to that in the CO2 Act. This takes into account the fact that the value anchored in the CO2 Act is still based on the outdated NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) measurement values."

Threat of sanction payments
However, the new and on average significantly higher WLTP (World Light Vehicles Test Procedure) measurement values will be used to create the energy label from January 1, 2020.

Markus Peter: "The fact that this target value of 95 grams of CO2 per kilometer has been increased to 115 grams is in the interests of both the industry and end customers in view of the threat of penalty payments."

Calculation of motor vehicle tax
However, the AGVS points out unpleasant side effects in connection with the new efficiency categories.

Markus Peter: "Various cantons take vehicle efficiency into account when calculating motor vehicle tax. There will be changes here that are certainly not always in the interests of car owners."

Adapt company car regulations
The new energy efficiency categories are also likely to have consequences for operators of company fleets.

Markus Peter: "Many fleet operators procure their vehicles based on consumption, CO2 emissions and energy efficiency. If the energy efficiency categories change in 2020, there is a risk that certain vehicles can no longer be procured. Fleet operators should adapt their company car regulations in good time."
