Electric cars: differences in subsidies

The comparison platform for insurance and financial products Hellosafe.ch has made an inventory of electric cars in Switzerland, taking a close look at the individual cantons.

Swiss federalism is particularly evident when it comes to subsidies for electric cars.

To create this ranking of cantons according to their support for the purchase of an electric car, Hellosafe has developed a scoring system with three main criteria: Number of electric cars compared to the number of inhabitants, average tax of the canton on electric cars and the tax bonus.

Large differences were found between the cantons. In German-speaking Switzerland, St. Gallen (6 points) and Zurich (5 points) are at the top, with Lucerne and Schwyz (1 point each) at the other end of the ranking.

Welsh cantons are more EV-friendly
German-speaking cantons averaged a score of 2.8 points, while French-speaking cantons scored 3.0 points. Among the important findings is that the seven cantons of Fribourg, Geneva, Glarus, Nidwalden, Solothurn, St. Gallen and Zurich do not levy taxes on electric cars, and that the maximum EV tax bonus is 582 francs, granted by St. Gallen. Geneva and Ticino also show themselves to be permissive in this respect.

Zurich in the lead with 14,786 EV cars
The highest proportion of electric cars was registered in Zug. There, 2.18 electric cars are registered per 100 inhabitants. In the second-placed canton of Zurich, the figure is just 0.95 EVs per 100 inhabitants. In absolute terms, Zurich leads with 14,786 cars, ahead of Vaud (6646) and Bern (6621).
