Diesel: New technology shows effect

Euro 6d-Temp diesels emit on average 76 percent less nitrogen oxide than Euro 6b diesels and 85 percent less than Euro 5 diesels. The ADAC has compared the nitrogen oxide emissions of diesel cars with the Euro 5, Euro 6b and Euro 6d-TEMP (including 6c) emissions standards measured in the Ecotest since 2012. Random road tests have shown that the reduction in pollutants in good Euro 6d-TEMP diesels [...]

For 52 percent of passenger cars, the average emissions in the current Ecotest were even less than 80 mg/km. The cleanest diesel measured to date is a BMW X1 sDrive18d with just 8 g/km.

The ADAC has compared the nitrogen oxide emissions of diesel cars with the Euro 5, Euro 6b and Euro 6d-TEMP (including 6c) emissions standards measured in the Ecotest since 2012. Random road tests have shown that the reduction in pollutants in good Euro 6d-TEMP diesels is as much as 95 to 99 percent compared to average Euro 5 diesels.

Poor results are a thing of the past
Many of the 149 models tested performed poorly. Their nitrogen oxide emissions in the Euro 5 Ecotest averaged 528 g/km - compared to the 180 g/km permitted on the test bench. The Renault Trafic Combi emitted the most (more than 1500 g/km), the VW Golf VII 1.6 TDI BlueMotion the least (135 g/km). The 69 Euro 6b vehicles tested averaged 341 g/km - with a permitted value of 80 g/km. At least six models were able to comply with this. The VW T6 Multivan (50 g/km), the Land Rover Discovery Td6 (61 g/km) and the BMW 118d (69 g/km) performed best.

Significant reduction in pollutants
The current Euro 6c and 6d-TEMP emissions standards, on the other hand, ensure a significant reduction in pollutants. The 25 models measured so far emitted an average of 81 g/km of nitrogen oxide in the Ecotest. This puts them within the permitted limit of 80 g/km - and under more demanding conditions than the type approval cycle. No model had really bad values. For 52 percent of the cars, the average emissions in the Ecotest were even less than 80 mg/km. The cleanest diesel measured to date is a BMW X1 sDrive18d with just 8 mg/km
