One of the most important regulations passed by the Bundestag: bans on older diesel vehicles should generally only be considered proportionate in cities where the limit values for harmful nitrogen dioxide (NO2) are significantly exceeded. The Federal Council approved the plan. In future, the coalition intends to hold regular top-level talks with the automotive industry in order to set the course for this important sector.
No change in the limit values
State Secretary for the Environment Florian Pronold (SPD) emphasized that the limit value would not be changed: "Driving bans are a harsh measure, and they are only proportionate if it is not foreseeable by other means that the limit values can be complied with very soon." As expected, there was sharp criticism from the opposition.
