From August 9 to 11, 2019, Birmenstorf AG will once again be the meeting place for vintage military vehicles. 600 vehicles and 25,000 visitors from all over Europe are expected. For the first time, the Swiss Army will be prominently represented with an army exhibition. But there is also a lot going on in the air: The Patrouille Suisse has definitely confirmed its participation again.
The D-Day is the focus
The eighth Convoy to Remember is on the one hand an exhibition and spare parts exchange, on the other hand entertainment and eye candy for all fans of well-maintained old military motor vehicles of various kinds. A rolling museum of historical rarities.
The largest military landing operation of all time, D-Day 1944, and the subsequent liberation of Europe from the Nazi yoke, will be celebrated for the 75th time. Numerous vehicles from that time are expected, including rarities worth seeing from the stock of the Allies at the time, but also the German Wehrmacht.
Swiss Army Exhibition
In a large army exhibition, the current tank inventory of the Swiss Army will be demonstrated together with equipment of the mechanized troops. The air force will drop long-range scouts with a Pilatus Porter, which belong to the elite troops. The Patrouille Suisse will demonstrate its program on Friday and Saturday with six F-5 Tigers.
More than 25 historical formations have confirmed their coming: the Swiss Cavalry Squadron 1972, the Cyclist Company, a BAT anti-tank platoon. The Swiss Military Museum Full will display vehicles and guns. Historic tanks will be demonstrated in motion, commented by experts.
Convoy has European significance
The sponsor of the event is the Convoy to Remember association based in Birmenstorf. The association is an institution qualified by the Military Department DDPS as a "Level B collector of military historical material". The event in Birmenstorf is intended to commemorate the liberation of Europe by the Allies and is now known throughout Europe. Seven convoys have been held since August 1996. In 2016, around 20,000 visitors came to Birmenstorf.
This year's convoy will also be the last of its kind. The area with the important gravel pit will be renaturalized and will no longer be available in the future.
