Belgium's capital will introduce a comprehensive low emission zone tomorrow, January 1, covering the entire Brussels metropolitan region and its 19 municipalities. In order to enter this zone, all European vehicle owners must first register in a municipal database. Older, polluting vehicles will then be excluded from traffic. For the time being, however, this regulation only applies to Belgians; foreigners will not have to register until summer 2018. However, in order not to miss this deadline, travelers should keep themselves continuously informed on the infoportal lez-belgium.be inform. All entry rules are already summarized here and the boundaries of the low emission zone can be viewed on the interactive map. In addition, the website compiles important information on all existing and planned Belgian environmental zones.
As the issue of air pollution becomes more and more present in Europe, more and more cities are introducing environmental zones. In neighboring France, for example, 17 environmental zones came into force last year, some of which even cover entire departments. In order not to lose track of the rapidly changing situation, all innovations can be tracked on the Green Zones app.
