Using the new calculation tool, which was developed together with the Paul Scherrer Institute, the ecological footprint can be calculated for over 2000 cars.
In order to calculate the carbon footprint of a vehicle, all the climate-impacting emissions that a vehicle causes must be taken into account - during production, operation and disposal of the cars.
Calculation of material and energy consumption
The TCS carbon footprint calculator takes into account the total material and energy consumption over the life of the vehicles and the associated emissions.
These include, for example, emissions from the mines from which iron for the car body or cobalt for the battery are sourced. Emissions from power generation and fuel production, including transport, are also taken into account.
Data and ratings of 2000 vehicles
The carbon footprint calculator uses an average vehicle mileage of 200,000 kilometers as the basis for the calculation. It draws on data from the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) and various federal offices (FEDRO, SFOE).
As a scientific partner, PSI also contributes the models for the calculations of the CO2 footprint of vehicle production.
Consideration of different drive types
Thanks to the overall view of emissions over the entire life of the car, it is now possible to compare different types of drive (internal combustion, electric and hybrid) in terms of their climate footprint. This is a world first.
The TCS car search, now with operating costs and carbon footprint calculator, is available to all users free of charge.
