Formula 1 drivers provide know-how for tuning sporty production cars - Alfa Romeo put this method into practice at its test track in Balocco in northern Italy. There, Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi extensively tested the two 540-hp Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA and GTAm special models.

During the tests in Balocco, the two GP drivers pushed the development car to the limit.

Legendary test base
The track, where Alfa Romeo has been developing racing cars since the 1960s, allowed the GP drivers of Alfa Romeo Racing from Hinwil to test the handling of the two sports sedans at the limit and provide direct feedback to the engineers.

The two professional drivers focused on specific technical proposals for optimizing the aerodynamics and handling of the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA sports sedan and the even more extreme Alfa Romeo Giulia GTAm.

The basis for the meetings was the historic workshop of the former racing department Autodelta in Balocco.

Feedback from the professionals
They analyzed changes made to the vehicle and passed on their impressions of the fast laps on the racetrack to the engineers. Together, they also evaluated the effects on driving dynamics.

Giovinazzi focused on statements about the aerodynamics of the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTAm, paying particular attention to the new carbon-fiber body components and wheel mounting.

For his part, Raikkonen worked with aerodynamicists from Alfa Romeo on the new spoilers for the front and rear of the car.

Made in Hinwil
The new aerodynamic components of the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTAm are made of carbon fiber at Sauber Motorsport in Hinwil. They include the front bumper, the side skirts, the diffuser, the rear spoiler of the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA and the large rear wing of the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTAm.

The GTA project benefits from the partnership between Alfa Romeo and Sauber's engineering and aerodynamics departments. The Swiss company looks back on 50 years of experience in motorsport, including 27 years in Formula 1, giving Sauber invaluable knowledge in the design and manufacture of carbon fiber components as well as in-depth expertise in aerodynamics.

Sauber has a wind tunnel equipped with the latest technology, which is one of the most powerful in Europe. For Alfa Romeo, the advantages of working with Sauber lie in the rapid production of individual parts (rapid prototyping) and ultimately the series production of these components.

The GTA racing version, also admired by Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi, was the benchmark in touring car racing in the 1600cc class in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
