The AGVS Garagist brings light into the winter darkness of road traffic with his expert knowledge and helpful tips.

In winter, functioning and correctly used lights are even more important than usual. Many drivers are also unaware that daytime running lights often only illuminate the front of the vehicle, while the rear remains in the dark.

Nothing works without light
If you switch on your car's lights in good time, you protect yourself and others. This is especially true in fog, snowfall or rain. In such conditions, daytime running lights are not enough; it is mandatory to switch on the low beam during the day.

It is not only important that the lights are switched on, but also that the headlights are set correctly. Headlights that are set too high dazzle oncoming traffic, while those that are set too low do not adequately illuminate the road. "A check of the high and low beams, brake lights, fog lights and turn signals at the AGVS garage should be an annual routine, just like fitting the winter wheels," says Markus Peter, Head of Technology & Environment at the Auto Gewerbe Verband Schweiz (AGVS).

In case of defect to the specialist
Defective lamps must be replaced as soon as possible. While halogen lamps can often be replaced yourself with a little manual skill, xenon or LED lamps belong in the hands of professionals. And for the adjustment of the increasingly complex headlights, the car has to go to the workshop anyway.

Accessories often useful
But even working lamps need to be maintained. It is a legal requirement that headlights, taillights, windows and rearview mirrors must be free of snow. Here, too, drivers can find the appropriate equipment at the AGVS garage: ice scraper, hand brush, gloves, de-icing spray.
