Ford Capri: The legend is back

Ford is once again reactivating a big name for a new electric model. The new model has nothing to do with its legendary ancestor - but the e-crossover is still a lot of fun.

Ford has done it again. After the Mustang Mach-E and Explorer, the US manufacturer is reactivating another big name for a new electric model for Europe: the Capri is back. However, apart from the name, it has nothing in common with the legendary Capri, which sweetened the anticipation of driving for many teenagers between 1968 and 1986 and has remained a dream car for some of them to this day.

The manufacturer sees things differently, of course. The central steering wheel spoke is reminiscent of the original model, emphasizes EV boss Ulrich Kösters. And chief designer Murat Güler sees even more similarities, which you can't see with the best will in the world. But it doesn't matter - because the new Capri is also a cool car that is fun all round. Whether the electric crossover also has the potential to become a legend, however, is highly doubtful.

Technology from VW
The 4.63-metre-long crossover offers plenty of space for the occupants, a generous trunk (570 to 1510 liters) and a modern cockpit with a huge touchscreen in portrait format. It is available as a rear-wheel drive version with 210 kW/286 hp and as an all-wheel drive version with 250 kW/340 hp, which have a battery with 77 and 79 kWh respectively - this enables WLTP ranges of up to 627 and 592 kilometers respectively. An entry-level version with a 52 kWh battery will follow later. Charging takes place with a maximum of 135 or 185 kW (DC) or 11 kW (AC).

As with the Explorer, the technical basis of the Capri comes from Volkswagen. It shares the platform with the VW ID.4, which can be recognized by a few details in the interior, provided you are familiar with them. However, the Capri drives like a Ford: balanced, precise and confident. It sits firmly on the road, turns in willingly and is skillfully sprung - the Ford engineers have done a good job in setting up the VW technology. With prices starting at 53,900 and 56,850 francs respectively, the new Ford Capri is not cheap, but it is on a par with the ID.4.
