TECHNICAL SPECIALIST Nevio Bernet from Ufhusen was crowned Swiss Automotive Mechatronics Champion 2023 at the Swiss Skills Championships 2023 held as part of the Berne Vocational and Training Fair.

Nevio Bernet, last year's runner-up, now the beaming winner at the Swiss Skills.

In the process, the qualifier for the official Swiss Vocational Championships for Automotive Mechatronics Technicians prevailed in the final. Nevio Bernet, who works at Dorfgarage Wagner in Zell LU, had already completed his competition in the first group on Thursday and then had to wait until Sunday evening for his victory to be determined.

And also like last year, Abinas Uthayarasa and Noah Frey were ranked directly behind Bernet - but in reverse order.

Tricky tasks at five posts

Over the course of the four days, 20 participants completed tricky tasks at five stations each. At the braking station, ABS and ESP malfunctions had to be repaired, and at the mechanics station, the participants' technical skills were tested on the chassis and steering. Mechanical skills were also required at the engine mechanics station. Engine components had to be measured and assessed from the disassembled cylinder head. At another station, the electrical system reported various faults that had to be diagnosed and rectified.

World Skills premiere with two women

The three best automotive mechatronics technicians specializing in passenger vehicles have qualified with their performance for the selection competition for the World Skills next September in Lyon. For the first time, the AGVS will also be competing in the commercial vehicles category at the World Skills Championships. The three best-ranked in the final of the Swiss Skills Championships, Alina Knüsel, Roger Ruch and Sophie Schumacher, will decide among themselves who will take part in a selection competition by the end of the year.

Great interest in automotive professions

Since 2018, Markus Schwab, who is responsible for Automotive Technology & Examinations at the AGVS, has been in charge of setting up and running the examinations at Swiss Skills.

Markus Schwab: "Solving all the problems and errors is very difficult. To achieve this, everything has to run optimally," he says. In addition, he says, one must not forget the stress factor at the trade show. "It's an exam situation, so some people are also nervous. There are also a lot of visitors standing on the sidelines watching."
