High-tech: distraction is most dangerous

COMPARISON In modern cars, more and more functions are operated via touchscreen or controller. This can lead to dangerous distractions. ADAC and TCS have compared six models.

Six compact class models were put to the test by the traffic clubs.

In the recent past, cars have evolved strongly and rapidly. Today's vehicles have become high-tech devices on wheels, with (too) many adjustment options. To make vehicle operation as ergonomic and intuitive as possible, manufacturers have developed new operating concepts.

They either bundle all the controls onto a central touchscreen or use a controller in the center console. The challenge for the developers is to distract the driver as little as possible while driving.

ADAC and TCS have examined the distraction risk of six models. Mazda, BMW, VW and Dacia scored "very recommendable", the clubs rated Mercedes as "recommendable" and Tesla only "conditionally recommendable".

Distraction and ease of use
Of the six vehicles tested, three are equipped with touchscreen and three with controller control. Voice or gesture control, which some models additionally offer, was not considered, however.

The evaluation focused exclusively on the usability of the switches and main controls. Distraction was determined by video observation with eye-tracking.

Important differences in the brands
The test subjects got along best with the Mazda 3 and the BMW 1 Series - two vehicles with controller-based operating systems. The VW Golf and Dacia Sandero, which primarily use the touchscreen, also received good marks.

However, the test subjects found that the touchpad of the Mercedes A-Class was less precise than the rotary control. The distraction times for finding the control for the windshield wipers were longer than average.

Long operating and search times with the Tesla
The greatest distraction potential is registered at Tesla. For drivers who are not familiar with the vehicle, the operating concept of the Model 3, which is housed with a huge touchscreen, scored the worst.

The operation of safety-relevant functions such as lighting or changing the windshield wiper level is only possible via the touchscreen, which leads to long operating and search times and thus to great distraction potential.
