Cupra: The Born is also a winter car 🎥
FIRST TEST Snow and cold are not really the feel-good terrain of electric cars. But the cliché of electric cars is no longer entirely true. The Cupra Born offers a lot of driving fun on snowy ground.
Having fun on ice and snow with an e-car? Without fear of losing range? Yes, that's possible, although not necessarily under classic everyday conditions, but during test drives on icy and snowy slopes in northern Finland, where you should still dress warmly now. But the next winter is sure to come again in Switzerland.
We start in Rovaniemi - where Santa Claus lives - near the airport, which is right next to Europastrasse 75. We are on the road with the 170 kW (231 hp) version of the Born, which has a range of 548 kilometers according to WLTP.
Stromer with solid winter features
In the harsh northern Finnish winter, the main roads are largely cleared of snow, but there is hardly enough grip to transfer the 310 Newton meters of torque to the surface. But that's all over after a few kilometers anyway, when it's time to hit the snow-covered side roads.
It quickly becomes apparent that the Stromer has solid winter properties. Rear-wheel drive and the favorable center of gravity due to the low battery contribute to the feeling of safety. A set of proper winter tires is a prerequisite, of course, and in northern Scandinavia the small studded tires are allowed. The little things work wonders.
You can even drift with the Spaniard
Later, during the dynamics exercises on an ice track, things get pretty brisk - with the guidance of various instructors, of course. Various configurations in the driving programs ensure that the Born is able to drift.
On the slalom course, the Stromer has to show that it can scurry safely around the pylons even in adverse weather conditions. Here, you also learn how to get through snow well: If you're about to get stuck or have already done so, you have to calmly get out of the predicament by stepping on the pedal to the right and countersteering decisively. This works well if you don't act too timidly.
Large touchscreen and head-up display
In general, the Cupra is an interesting change from the more sedate alternatives in the compact segment, especially visually. In particular, the design inlays in the color Copper, which can be found everywhere on the vehicle as the Cupra trademark, ensure the striking recognition value desired by the manufacturer.
Inside, the Born also turns out to be an infotainment genius with a large touchscreen area. There's even a head-up display that projects driving data from augmented reality. Sporty yet comfortable seats make the Born an all-purpose vehicle that you can dare to take on more journeys. The next winter can come.
Test drives on the occasion of Man's World
If you want to know more about the Born and take off for a rather summery taster ride around Zurich, don't miss Man's World from May 5-8, 2022.
The reason: in Hall 550 of the trade fair in Oerlikon, Cupra will be in action this year as Main Sponsor. The brand will offer multi-sensory experiences that allow visitors to touch, see and hear the world of Cupra. In addition, test drives of all current models will also be offered. Look forward to the Born.
